Here is another example for you: the Danish nuclear physicist Niels Bohr is said to have told a story about Newton’s having a horseshoe over his front door. Sirlin, Rhoda A. (1990) William Styron's Sophie's Choice: Crime and Self-Punishment, Ann Arbor, MI: University of Michigan Research Press. Beranek, Stephanie (2015) [2003] "William Styron: Sophie's Choice," at London School of Journalism, June 2003. Accessed 2 May 2023. As the story progresses, Sophie tells Stingo of her past. She describes her violently anti-Semitic father, a law professor in Kraków; her unwillingness to help him spread his ideas; her arrest by the Nazis; and particularly, her brief stint as a stenographer-typist in the home of Rudolf Höss, the commander of Auschwitz, where she was interned. She specifically relates her attempts to seduce Höss in an effort to persuade him that her blond, blue-eyed, German-speaking son should be allowed to leave the camp and enter the Lebensborn program, in which he would be raised as a German child. She failed in this attempt, and ultimately, never learned of her son's fate. Only at the end of the book does the reader also learn what became of Sophie's daughter, Eva. In addition to appearing in print, all six books have been recorded undramatised and unabridged, read by Bernard Cribbins, and have been subsequently released both as Cassette tapes and CDs. I was a philosophy major in school and *everybody* would ask if I had read Sophie's World. "What an amazing book!" they would gush. "You'll love it!" It wasn’t compulsory to send girls to primary school until 1883, so many girls weren’t taught to read and write beyond what they needed to know at home. The second step for philosophy, I think it should be book about specific topics with kind of depth, and i recommend "Luc Ferry's" books such as "Learning to Live" as it super smart ideas summarized to easy sense,Law, Richard G. It follows Sophie Amundsen, a Norwegian teenager, who is introduced to the history of philosophy as she is asked "Who are you?" in a letter from an unknown philosopher. [1] The nonfictional content of the book aligns with Bertrand Russell's The History of Western Philosophy. [2] In the Xiao Baosen-translated Chinese version ( Simplified Chinese) published by Writers Publishing House, parts of the content related to Karl Marx were deleted according to the requirements of the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, such as the last 32paragraphs in the Marx Chapter. Hm," said Sofie. "On the one hand, I don't feel I'm very well written. My dialogue is flat and implausible. I'm not a particularly credible character, just a mouthpiece for the author. Of course the same goes for you."The British composer Nicholas Maw wrote an opera based on the novel, which was premiered at the Royal Opera House in London in 2002, and has also been performed in Washington, Berlin and Vienna. [19] Publication history and related works [ edit ] Selected publication history [ edit ] Sophie's Choice was censored in the Soviet Union, and likewise banned in Communist Poland for "its unflinching portrait of Polish anti-Semitism". [14] As a history, the book fares much better. As an introduction to philosophy, or even a refresher survey, it excels. Gaarder, through the character of Alberto Knox, is a superb teacher.

Sophie's Choice won the US National Book Award for Fiction in 1980. [1] The novel was the basis of a 1982 film of the same name. It was controversial for the way in which it framed Styron's personal views regarding the Holocaust. Throughout the entire story, I found it very unrealistic that no one else thought that it was untoward or creepy that a 40-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl were alone together for hours in his house several days a week. Sophie's mother was very curious about this man, but she never forbade Sophie from seeing him or asked Sophie if everything was all right, and she only met him after the correspondence course had been going on for several months. Sophie was ditching schoolwork and family to be with this man and was totally obsessed with him. He remained totally in control throughout the whole story and commanded her in a way that made me uncomfortable at times. It seems that Gaarder would have been uncomfortable having the philosophy teacher be female -- Gaarder himself used to be a philosophy teacher, and so he probably found it more comfortable to have the character representing him be the same sex as him -- but he was too squeamish to confront the realities of such a socially suspect relationship, and I found that irresponsible of him, especially in a book geared towards young adults. The book has been translated into several languages, including Portuguese, Persian, Bengali, English, Hindustani ( Hindi and Urdu), French, German and Chinese. Below are mentioned the names and translators of the translations. Remember I said “It’s not very good?” I was talking about the novel/fiction/entertainment half of the book. Here’s the plot in a nutshell: Sophie begins getting letters from a stranger. These letters form the text of a correspondence course in philosophy. Sophie learns and grows and begins to think about her world differently.

And Hegel would also agree," said Sofie. "He would say I had become part of the Weltgeist, the World Spirit. The Weltgeist encompasses many individual minds, so although I am written by a different person, I am still me."

Sophie's Choice generated significant controversy at time of its publication. Sylvie Mathé notes that Sophie's Choice, which she refers to as a "highly controversial novel", appeared in press in the year following the broadcast of the NBC miniseries Holocaust (1978), engendering a period in American culture where "a newly-raised consciousness of the Holocaust was becoming a forefront public issue." [2] Mathé says: that is, it has him insisting on seeing Auschwitz in particular in more universal terms as "a murderous thrust against 'the entire human family.'" [2] [3] Styron further extends his argument, again with controversy: Styron, William (1979) Sophie's Choice, New York, NY: Random House, ISBN 0-394-46109-6 and ISBN 978-0-394-46109-0.
