Simple to use. Good basic functions including timer and auto-off. Decent sized scale surface compatible with brewing into larger jugs. The bad stuff. They're a good few cm deeper than the Timemore, 1cm narrower, and just a few mm taller. The good stuff. To conclude this post, as with everything coffee-related, there's plenty of options out there, ranging from the more domestic, cheaper “standard” coffee scales right up to the professional grade barista gear at prices that would lead many of us to take a sharp intake of breath, followed by one or two rather rude words.

So you don’t need scales that are good for 0.1g increments up to say 2kg as you’ll never need to use them at those higher weights, and you'll be paying for functionality you don't need. With filter coffee, 60-65 grams of ground coffee is a good guide to freshly brew 1 litre of coffee. They also have their fingers and toes dipped in pretty much every aspect of homebrewing, my trusty manual Hario coffee grinder accompanied me to many coffee farms throughout the Americas. So in this post, I'm including what I believe to be the best scales in each category, the cheap scales, reasonably priced scales, and high end coffee scales. Cheap coffee scalesNot all rechargeable scales are the same when it comes to how long they last on a charge, though, and generally speaking the more expensive scales last longer on a charge. Some also have more obscure charging ports while some come with USB-C ports which are the same as most modern smartphones except iPhone, which can be very handy. How much should you spend on coffee scales? So you can use kitchen scales if you want to but using proper coffee scales will make your coffee experience better.

In fact, the only thing that gives away the fact that this is some kind of a device is the charging port, and this is also the point of reference to show you where the invisible on button is. With the charging port on the top right, if you press the empty surface on the bottom right, this thing comes to life, and then it's clear that you haven't been sold a square lump of plastic, it is actually a set of coffee scales. Although, you could of course go for rechargeable batteries. My issue with these is that I'm terrible when it comes to losing battery chargers ;-), I've given up buying anything with rechargeable batteries as I'm convinced we have some kind of alien living in the house that survives only from consuming battery chargers! So I prefer to use devices that simply have a charging port on them – yes, this little alien eats them too, but I've usually got one of them somewhere for charging something else, that I can use. Oh, wait, did I mention The Coffeeworks, my own coffee beans?? Hehe, yeah, I know I did, but here's another little plug just in case you missed the last one. This versatile aluminium coffee scale is also water-resistant, which goes a long way toward durability and reduced water damage. Perfect for weighing coffee shots on a busy espresso bar. What we like... The price, it's one of the most expensive coffee scales aimed at manual brew methods and is around three times the price of some of the more reasonably priced options above.

The Felicta Incline Scale has been manufactured for coffee connoisseurs. This Incline Scale is suitable on majority drip trays for espresso alongside it is ideal for all pour overs. The Incline Scale, having this super fast response time, this measures both time & weight. It is also water resistant & durable as the Arc scales. This Incline comes along with a removable heat resistant rubber mat where this ensures weighing in portafilters simple. Also, the Incline Scale has a customisable smart auto-off functionality. The Felicita ARC scales are possibly the ultimate and only scale you’ll ever need for taking coffee brewing seriously at home. A tonne of features include auto timer, programmable auto-off, auto tare, and blue tooth connectivity. It has an auto-shutoff when it turns off in five minutes after being inactive (while the timer is off); It's a shame because I really love the things about these scales that I really love, how short they are, how great they feel, how fast they are – but the things that annoy me about the lunar, really annoy me! ;-). I think for this kind of price they could have engineered a much less annoying user interface that doesn't make me regularly want to launch these very expensive scales out of the window. This versatile aluminium coffee scale is also water-resistant, which goes a long way towards durability and reduced water damage. Perfect for weighing coffee shots on a busy espresso bar. Designed for high-volume bar service, the Felicita Incline Coffee Scale can double as both espresso and pour over coffee scale. Its compact size allows it to fit comfortably on an espresso machine drip tray, or on the brew bar. The Hario V60 coffee drip scale is a great bit of kit if you are serious about your morning pour over. The scales measure to 0.1g of accuracy and the integrated timer means you will be able to brew extremely accurate coffee. The Brewista Smart coffee scales are suitable for both the beginner and the professional user. It is a smart scale which has been redesigned to meets the need of the coffee users. It’s more water-resistant than the previous model with its sealed body and its silicone platform pad.
